I understand from mutual friends that Nick died at 52 years old.  Although, looking now at the "in memory" section of this site, I see a date of 2002 for his death.  That doesn't seem to match the age I was told for his death.

My understanding is that it was a brain anuarism.  It may have been something that ran in the family as his father died of the same thing or at least something similar.

I have some great memories of Nick.  We were on the wrestling team for a time together.

Nick was the person, more than any other, who taught me how to deal with fear. Anyone who played football for the Totems and had to go one on one with Nick in practice knows what I'm talking about. Nick was tough. When you saw him coming at you, you knew it was going to be a punishing moment. Nick showed so much character during games. He never quit. He always encouraged. If I were to run the ball I always hoped the play would be over his spot because I knew he would do his job and do it well. In school, or at a dance, or in practice, if you were Nick's friend, you had your back covered. He was gentle yet had a great deal of self confidence. I see him as an 18 year old young man with tremendous potential to influence others to do their best. That's the way I always want to think of him. Jay

I have an article from the Eastside newspaper August 6, 2002:  Elden N, "Nick" Kepler of Las Vegas and formerly of Branson, Mo., and Bellevue, has died at Desert Springs Hospital in Las Vegas of internal injuries suffered when he was hit by an automobile. He was 57. It goes on but that is the main message.
